ARTIST STATEMENT

As a director/writer, I have a varied history in creating interdisciplinary projects in sound, theater, film and video. I was the artistic director and co-founder of DOORIKA (1990’s) – a performance arts collective based in Chicago and New York. My experimental theater pieces were often exercises in archival research, collage, appropriation and historical reinterpretation. In 1997, my first video project, In Search of Bas Jan’s Miraculous was featured on NPR’s This American Life

Since 1999, I have focused primarily on video and filmmaking and have won grants such as Experimental Television Center's Finishing Funds Grant for my short The Forgery (20 mins., DV, 2000) which won a CineWomen NY Special Jury Award, NYSCA Media Grant for my feature film Pose Down (2007, 86 mins, S16) and The Bachelors of Broken Hill Farm was awarded Best LGBTQ Historical Documentary at the Hollywood Women’s Film Festival, was a semi-finalist at Blow Up Art Film Festival in Chicago and recently won Viewer’s Choice Award at TINFF 2020. In May 2021, both POSE DOWN and The Bachelors of Broken Hill Farm were featured at Fort Myers Film Festival. My new video art piece “2020/1” is showing in various art exhibitions.

My videos and films have screened at various film festivals and art institutions such as: Lincoln Center's New York Video Festival, Ars Electronica, IFP's Buzzcuts, Berlin's Transmediale, Silver Lake Film Festival, Stedelijk Museum, Dallas Video Festival, Artists Space, Art in General, ASUAM, Amsterdam's World Wide Video Festival, Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, Cologne Off, Exploding Cinema, Pioneer Theater, Galapagos Art Space, Cucalorus Film Festival, Moviate, LA Freewaves, Cinemateket at the Danish Film Institute and NewFilmmakers among others.
